East Border Region Members Forum

27 June 2013

East Border Region hosted a Members Forum in the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa on 27 June 2013.  The event highlighted East Border Region's Tourism Development Plan which is part financed by the European Union's INTERREG IVA Cross Border Programme and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.  The aim of the project is to support the development of tourism products that will attract domestic and overseas visitors and will contribute towards improving the performance of the tourism industry in the eligible region. The partner Councils have identified particular project opportunities, which will exploit the natural and built environment of the cross border region. The partners are also seeking to build on the progress made by East Border Region Tourism Partnership in the recent past and have collaborated to improve the tourism product overall.

The Tourism products will be supported on a cross border basis and will be based on niche areas including culture/heritage, Christian heritage, natural resources, marine and water based tourism. In particular, focus will be placed on encouraging and supporting projects which will develop tourism activities and broaden the tourism season. In addition support will be provided to promote and enhance the visitor experience through improved visitor servicing in particular utilising new technologies.  Members listened to presentations by Sinéad Murray, Co-operative Marketing Manager from Tourism Ireland, Kevin Moriarty, Head of Operations from Failte Ireland and Dette Hughes, INTERREG IVA Programme Manager from East Border Region.
