East Border Region attend reception by invitation of the Taoiseach in honour of Cardinal Sean Brady

5 February 2008

East Border Region representatives were delighted to be in attendance last night (Monday 4th February) at a reception hosted by the Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern T.D. in honour of Cardinal Sean Brady in Dublin Castle.

A large crowd gathered at Dublin castle to celebrate the honour conferred on the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland by his appointment to the College of Cardinals. The Taoiseach congratulated the Cardinal on his achievements and eloquently spoke of the Cardinals many achievements, “I have known the Cardinal for many years. I have admired the quiet but determined manner in which he has provided leadership in his own diocese and in the wider community. That leadership has been based upon his capacity to be close to ordinary people in their everyday lives, in times of joy and suffering alike. It has enabled him to understand their fears, as well as their hopes. It has enabled him to understand those from other traditions, and the concerns and experiences that have led so often to alienation and hostility”.

Cllr Michael Carr stated that the reception was extremely enjoyable and wished the Cardinal every happiness and success for the future.
