Project Aim: The overall aim of the East Border Region Plato Programme is'to contribute to the sustainability and competitiveness of the East Border Region

by assisting SMEs and their parent company partners themselves to become more sustainable and competitive,

by assisting them to
•overcome the specific challenges that arise from the existence of the border, and
•to take advantage of the new opportunities and working approaches which arise from business networking and collaboration.

Project Summary:

The Programme will be delivered by the East Border Region Plato Programme staff, working in consultation with District Councils across the East Border Region and with County Enterprise Boards.

16 Plato Groups involving 240 SMEs will be formed. These Groups will be facilitated by 32 experienced senior managers from large parent companies. Each Plato Group will also be supported by a paid mentor to follow up Group discussions and priorities. Bespoke training modules will be delivered to participant companies, a total of 44 training modules will be delivered to 600 participant SMEs. 48 facilitators and mentors will receive training in facilitation and mentoring skills. 80 SMEs will also be involved in 4 Plato Graduate Forums. A further 80 companies will be involved in 4 cluster development initiatives, each participant SME will receive an individual cluster action plan as part of the cluster development strategies developed. An annual networking and trade development event will be held on a cross-border basis, attracting 225 participants over the 3 year Programme.

The Programme will be overseen by a Steering Committee comprised of representatives of County Enterprise Boards and District Councils across the East Border Region, representatives from the statutory agencies and representatives of established businesses in the East Border Region.

Prior to the detailed implementation of the initiative consultations will be held with East Border Region and its constituent Councils to determine local needs, opportunities and priorities.
