Rock Camp - Children's Geo Summer Scheme

29 August 2013

This Summer Scheme will engage children from across the region to explore, enjoy and learn about the landscape and environment around them. This scheme will compliment the new Education Programme for Schools which will commence during the 2013-14 Academic Year.

The Rock Camp programme will have the following key aims:
• Expose children to the geology, geomorphology (physical geography) and archaeology of their local area through fun educational experiences and the creative arts.
• Provide an educational and recreational opportunity where children can gain an appreciation and understanding of geology, heritage, myth and legend, geomorphology and archaeology.
• Content will align with national curricula and national teaching standards but with a focus on understanding the local environment.
• All aspects of the scheme should be fun, interactive and dynamic with activities tailored towards children aged between 7-13 years.
• The scheme will teach established scientific facts but it will also enhance local knowledge by encouraging children to share their own understanding of local physical features, old buildings and townland names.
Dates for the Rock Camps are scheduled as follows:
• Mourne Rock Camp Festival: 29th July - 2nd August 2013
• Gullion Rock Camp Festival: 5th - 9th August 2013
• Cooley Rock Camp Festival: 19th - 23rd August 2013
