Transnational programmes (INTERREG IVB) aim to promote a higher degree of territorial integration, with a view to achieving sustainable, harmonious and balanced development across the EU and better territorial integration with candidate and other neighbouring countries. Key areas of focus include: Innovation, Environment, Accessibility and Sustainable Urban Environment.

There are 13 programme zones, three of which are relevant to Northern Ireland:

East Border Region Ltd are currently liaising potential partners in relation to an INTERREG IVB Project entitled 'Prometeus'. The project, currently in the developmental stages is being led by the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and will comprise approximately 10 partners from other border regions in Europe as well as EBR (on behalf of Ireland/Northern Ireland). Other potential partners are IntertradeIreland and Dundalk Institute of Technology

The Aims of the 'Prometeus' project are;

  • To initiate a structured and inter organisational learning process between cross border zones
  • To establish "cross border innovation systems"
  • To develop policy initiatives in R&D/Innovation
